Size

Aragonite calcium is an alternative calcium source that can be used for isopods, invertebrates, chickens and other fowl, even as hamster sand or a calcium additive for plants like tomatoes.  I am proud to offer this renewable calcium source in a smaller 3-ounce size as well as the larger one-pound bag.

To use with isopods, I add 3 tablespoons to my substrate mix for every 6-quart container, mixing the calcium into the substrate evenly. Species that need extra calcium will also get an additional teaspoon of the aragonite calcium powder on the top of the dry side of the bin's substrate (picture isopod beach if you will). For chickens and egg laying birds, we recommend 1 pound of aragonite calcium per every 20 lbs of feed during laying season.

 What is Aragonite?

The formation of aragonite (biogenic CaCO₃) occurs as a phenomenon described as a “Whitings” event. The “Whitings” are an accumulation of precipitated calcium carbonate induced by photosynthesis, occurring in blooms of phytoplankton, which seasonally enter the warm shallow waters of the Bahamas. It is phosphorus free and contains naturally occurring marine amino acids.

Unlike ground calcium carbonate (limestone, etc.) which is from nonrenewable fossil sources, oolite aragonite is the only calcium carbonate from a renewable and sustainable source.
