LECA - Expanded Clay Balls

LECA is an acronym that stands for "lightweight expanded clay aggregate." 

These clay balls are a widely popular media used in bioactive enclosures as a drainage layer. This provides a good water drainage base in many amphibian enclosures as well as providing much needed humidity for more humid setups. Another added benefit to using these expanded clay balls for a drainage layer is that they give your springtails and isopods somewhere to hang out away from your reptile or amphibian.

LECA clay balls are also an excellent to use for houseplant potting in the place of soil, depending on the species of plant. We do not recommend using them for every plant however because drought tolerant, and plants with weak or fragile roots may not do well in LECA. You can also add LECA into your homemade chunky aroid soil mix. 

LECA clay balls are fire baked in kilns to make them great for holding onto water, which makes them a popular choice for plant keepers, especially since they are a reusable and renewable substrate.
